Get ready as your dream to reach Ladakh easily is all possible now! After going through lot of difficulties, the Border Road Organization has confirmed the major victory of constructing World’s Highest Motorable Road in Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir.
The road passes via Umlingla Top at an elevation of about 19,300 ft. This 86 km stretch is constructed under ‘Project Himank’ of the BRO organization where the road connects the villages of Chisumle and Demchok, situated 230 km from Leh.
Construction at such high altitude has been a life threatening task as the climate of the location always remains adverse for building activities. Also, the efficiency of the manpower and machines used to decline it to 50 percent because of the less amount of oxygen availability. Sometimes, even the machine operators have to come down every 10 minutes for the intake of oxygen.
“During peak summers, temperature hovers around minus 10-20 degrees Celsius, and in winters, it dips to minus 40 degrees. Oxygen level at the altitude is 50 per cent less than at normal places,” Purvimath (Chief Engineer) said.
The BRO workers were acclimatized properly through a difficult training process before this job assignment. “Acclimatization of men is done at three stages — Leh, Shakti and Numa — before being inducted into the sector. Physical and mental fitness of men is emphasized upon for working in the area as the working season is limited in the region,” Pardeep Raj, Commander 753 BRTF, who looks after road construction of this sector said.
Earlier, road to the Uturuncu dormant volcano in Bolivia was considered to be the world’s highest motorable road, located at the height of 18,953 ft. If you still feel that road drive is too much for you, then book flights at lowest airfare with us and don’t miss out the adventures of Ladakh.
